Industry FAQ
Q: What does SEER mean. One contractor quoted 14 SEER and another quoted 13 SEER. What is the difference?
A: The efficiency of air conditioners are often (but not always) rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient is the air conditioner. The SEER rating is the Btu of cooling output during its normal annual usage divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours (W·h) during the same period. SEER = BTU ÷ W·h For example, a 5000 Btu/h air-conditioning unit, with a SEER of 10, operating for a total of 1000 hours during an annual cooling season (i.e., 8 hours per day for 125 days) would provide an annual total cooling output of: 5000 Btu/h × 1000 h = 5,000,000 Btu which, for a SEER of 10, would be an annual electrical energy usage of: 5,000,000 Btu ÷ 10 = 500,000 W·h and that is equivalent to an average power usage during the cooling season of: 500,000 W·h ÷ 1000 h = 500 W
Q: What is the best major brand of equipment (Goodman, Carrier, York, Lennox, Rheem) and what are the differences between them?
A: At Ryan, we service and install all of the major brands of equipment, so we are not biased to recommend one single brand. The fact is that all of them have there strong points and we will recommend different systems depending on your needs. For instance, if you are having balancing problems where one area is too cool and another is too warm, we recommend the Carrier Infinity zoning system. If you are looking for the most bang for your budgetary dollar we may recommend a Goodman.
Q: How long does a furnace last? Our's is only 15 years old and the technician recommeded changing it. My parents house has had the same furnace for 40 years.
A: A typical forced warm air furnace will last 15-20 years. A good maintenace program like the ryan comfortPlus© plan will make sure you get the most from your investment. However, there are other reasons that a technician may recommend replacing a furnace, not the least of which is efficency. Older less efficent furnaces use more fuel and it may wind up costing you more money in the long run to keep an old inefficent furnace.
Q: How much energy can I save if I upgrade my thermostat?
A: By using a programmable thermostat you can save up to 30% from a standard thermostat.
Q: How often should I have my ducts cleaned?
A: Since conditions in every home are different, it is impossible to say how often an air duct cleaning would be beneficial. In the majority of homes, cleaning and inspection once every three years is adequate. The type of air filter you are using and the frequency of maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment can have a significant affect on the duration between cleanings. The purchase of a good quality air cleaner will protect your heating and air conditioning equipment, duct system and your home, while scheduled maintenance will extend the life of the equipment and increase its efficiency. If you would like more information, we recommend that you visit the EPA web site for in-depth coverage of the subject.
Q: What information should I get beforehand about a service company coming into my home?
A: First, get to know the company itself. If you get a good feeling when they answer the phone and when talking with them, you will be comfortable dealing with them. You may want to ask how long they have been in business, a good company will stand the test of time. You should find out how the company bills for service. You're better off with a company that uses a standardized price book (like the Princeton Onerate© system), you won't pay more for a job because the work took longer than it should have.
Q: Should I set my thermostat at a constant temperature during the summer months or should I turn it off while we are away and then turn it on when we are home? Which will save me money in the long run?
A: During the summer months I would recommend you set your thermostat back during the day when you are not home. However, I would not recommend that you go over your desired temperature more than five to seven degrees. Another recommendation would be that you have a programmable thermostat installed that would automatically change the setting for you once it was programmed.
Q: What is the NATE certification?
A: NATE, North American Technician Excellence Inc., is an independent, third-party certification body for HVAC/R technicians. NATE certification is designed for installation and service technicians who work on residential and light commercial equipment and systems: Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Gas Heating, Heat Pumps and Oil Heating.
NATE certifies only those technicians who achieve mastery of an industry-approved level of knowledge. The tests are developed by industry leaders and reflect a consensus opinion of what the average technician should know to effectively install and service HVAC systems.
There are no experience or educational requirements, but NATE recommends that installation technicians have at least one year of field experience and service technicians have at least two years of field experience.
